Friday Photo: Black Hills bison

November 19, 2010

Black Hills, South Dakota (August 2010)

A massive group of a couple hundred bison likes to hang out near the Norbeck Visitor Center in the Black Hills of South Dakota. They are not bothered by your puny human vehicles and will wander around as if you’re not even there, as this shot from the front seat of the van shows.

Friday Photo: Fur trade museum

November 12, 2010

Chadron, Nebraska (August 2010)

There’s a museum in the middle of nowhere in western Nebraska dedicated to the fur trade. Unfortunately it was closing just as we arrived, so we only got to see the outside.

Friday Photo: Giant Jesus

November 5, 2010

Sioux City, Iowa (August 2010)

In Sioux City there’s this religious organization with giant 30-foot-high statues of Jesus and Mary. It’s hard to get perspective in this shot, but note how the statue is taller than the trees behind it.

Friday Photo: American fries

October 29, 2010

Valentine, Nebraska (August 2010)

While enjoying lunch at a small-town restaurant in Nebraska, we spotted “American fries” on the menu. Intrigued, we ordered them. Turns out they are silver-dollar shaped potato patties.

My other travel writings

October 21, 2010

I present a few links to some articles I’ve written in recent months over on Associated Content, some of which deal with travel topics I’ve covered here in the past.

Providence’s Questionable Overnight Parking Ban
This is a sad but fun story. I was going to blog about this here, but I never got around to it. I got a parking ticket while in Providence, Rhode Island, but because I didn’t deserve the ticket, I refused to pay. Click the link to read more about the story.

Here’s the actual photo I took of my van on the street in Providence. Note the sign stating that parking is restricted only between 8 and 10 am.

Is Pittsburgh a Bike-Friendly City?
Hint – I’ll reveal the answer: Not yet, but getting there.

Where to Bike in Chicago
I’ve been biking up a storm since I moved here. This article provides a list of five suggested places to bike with only minimal chance of being run over by a bus.

Six Flags Chicago Review
I bought a season pass this year and went at least 5 times. It’s a great value, even though the coasters pale in comparison to what I’m used to at Kennywood and Cedar Point.

Sun Studio Review
I wrote about Sun Studios in great detail on this blog during my post on visiting Memphis.

Friday Photo: Sunset over Wyoming

October 15, 2010

Somewhere in Wyoming (August 2010)

As we entered Wyoming the sun was rapidly going down fast.
