Somewhere in Idaho (June 2009)
I saw this weather button at an Idaho rest area and thought, What a great idea! So I pushed it. And it didn’t work. Fail.

Pacific Valley, California (June 2009)
Driving up the California coastline I stopped to observe the elephant seals and found this bird that took ownership of this fence. It just did not want to relinquish its powerful lookout position.

Here’s part 3 in my occasional series of posts about Chicago’s local attractions. So far I’ve written about the Mexican Art Museum and the Museum of Science & Industry.
A couple of months ago, my friend Jason from LA (you remember him from part of my summer road trip) came to visit the Midwest and stopped in Chicago for a couple days. One of the touristy things we did was go to the top of the Sears Tower, now called the Willis Tower.
A few years back they built an observation deck with a glass floor. It extends out from the building, so you can actually walking out into open space and stare through the glass floor, down 110 stories. A lot of people get freaked out by that but I found it fun.
Jason decided to relax.
At the top of the tower there’s a map showing how far you can see when the weather is good.
The view from up there is pretty spectacular. You’re looking down on the tallest buildings in the city, like the Trump Tower and John Hancock building.
Somewhere in Texas (May 2009)
I thought it was odd that a fast food restaurant would sell catfish livers and gizzards. Fortunately, I never had the pleasure of dining there.

Somewhere in Colorado (July 2009)
Some of the scenery in Colorado was magnificent, like the raging rivers and mountains. Other parts of the state were pretty flat and barren.
