DAY 112: Asbury Park, New Jersey
Miles traveled: 15,170
States visited: 39 (just added: New Jersey)
Weather: 90, hot
We had a day to spend in New Jersey and I really wanted to go to a beach. It turns out that you have to pay to go to the beach in New Jersey. What a racket! I wonder if this has something to do with the mafia.
There are only a couple of free beaches in the entire state. The rest cost $5 or more. We went to Asbury Park just because I recognized the name as the hometown of Bruce Springsteen. The Asbury Park beach was no exception to the fee rule, but we found out it was free after 5 pm, and since we arrived at 4 pm, we decided to kill time for an hour and then hit the beach.
The waves were huge, they were the biggest I’ve ever gotten to swim in. We didn’t take many pictures, because we were busy playing in the waves. The regulations sign is funny if you read it through. No swimming if you’ve recently experienced diarrhea!
We also encountered The Stone Pony, a legendary music venue that sits right next to the beach.
Now it’s off to New York City!
