Crafting the ultimate road trip CD

DAYS UNTIL TRIP: 21

I love making mix CDs. I’m in the process of putting together the ultimate road trip CD. I’ve done some googling on this topic, but most of the suggestions are just random rock songs, like Blink 182 or Creedence Clearwater Revival. I want songs that are actually about traveling!

Here’s what I have so far:
Life is a Highway – Tom Cochrane
Everyday is a Winding Road – Sheryl Crow
On the Road Again – Willie Nelson
Moab – Conor Oberst
Route 66 – Depeche Mode
Road Trippin – Red Hot Chili Peppers
Adventurers – Be Your Own Pet
Open Road Song – Eve6
Wide Open Spaces – Dixie Chicks
Stick Shifts & Safety Belts – Cake

Any other suggestions? I found a list of songs about cars (Little Red Corvette, Fast Car), but those songs aren’t specifically about DRIVING, so I’m not including them. I’m also trying to limit the number of slower songs because they’re not really fun to sing along to, so stuff like On the Road Again might not make the final cut. I will probably not include the Eve6 song either, because I hate Eve6 and because that song was so blatantly written specifically for this purpose. I will not submit to their pandering!

I could also include songs that reference specific cities/states, but I think I’ll save those for after my trip, when I’ll make a retrospective CD describing where I’ve been. Some songs I’m imagining will appear on that CD are:

Carolina On My Mind – James Taylor
Midnight Train to Georgia – Gladys Knight & the Pips
Walking in Memphis – Marc Cohn
Tennessee – Arrested Development
California – Metro Station
No Sleep Til Brooklyn – Beastie Boys

I’ll have to find some good songs for Texas, Arizona, Seattle, Chicago, the Dakotas.

I object! Singing along to “on the road again” is a TON of fun. Give it a chance!

Waltzing Matilda – The version by Tom Waits, it’s like about these travelers and their bags, and it’s also like the unofficial national anthem for Australia, the tom waits version is neat cause he sounds like Ralph from The Muppets.
